Topic 9 study concept.

Role of women during WWII:
Women began to work during the war, and when the soldiers came back home most of them lost their job and went back to being a house wife.

C/E of atomic bomb:
The U.S. bombed Japan frequently and millions of people died from the attack. Also, the U.S. wanted to end the war, but those plans didn't work out.

U.S. Foreign policy before/during/after the war:
Before the war, the U.S. was isolationist. During the war, the U.S. didn't want to get involved until we got attacked. After the war, the U.S. got involved in foreign affairs and joined the United Nations.

Effects of the war on Europe:
There was a bad economic change, there were many casualties, and Imperialism ended.

Effect of Pearl Harbor:
This caused another dropping of the Atomic bomb, the military started to believe in the radar systems, the U.S. declared war against Japan, and all Japanese or Japanese decent were sent to relocation camps.

Japanese Internment:
Japanese Americans and any person who was of Japanese decent were put in relocation camps because they were considered a threat after the attack of Pearl Harbor.

Neutrality Acts: -During 1935-1937.
-Not able to sell weapons to countries at war. - Embargo
-U.S. battle ships could not be armed.

Purpose of propaganda?:
Propaganda gets people into believing things that aren't true.

Rationing:
-American's conserved everything to help soldiers in war.
-Families would ration food, gas, and clothing.

Results of WWII?:
-United Nations.
-Poverty.
-Baby Boom
-Atomic Bombs.
-Cold War.

The two interviews of the Holocaust survivors were simply shocking. I honestly could barely watch and listen to it all. I felt like i was going to have an anxiety attack and i know that sounds drastic but i felt so bad for them. All i could do was watch and try to understand what they had to go through. If i had gone through what they went through i wouldnt have been able to handle any of it i would have simply give up on life. As i watched Georged cry, i could tell the pain and suffering that he went through. It was so traumatizing that even thinking about it made him weak. When you acted out that scene i was scared and very emotional i just wanted it
to end. Those people are so emotionally affected by everything but at the same time they should feel luckt to have overcomed that.

In many school the history in the textbooks that are provided for students is being edited. Censoring the truth about out world is wrong because everyone should have full understanding of the past occurances. We are going through life learning superficial information instead of going deep into the reality that once was. We as students should be allowed to learn both sides of the conflict. A great example of hiding the truth from students would be the history about the Rape of Nanjing. I learned about it today in my history class but not by reading it from our textbooks but by listening to my teacher explaining it because information about it was not provided for us. What occured was disturbing and shocking for me. I couldnt believe that i had never heard about this before, specially since an incredibly high amount of people were killed from it. People were tortured in disturbing ways. People were forced to rape their own family members, some people were opened alive, babies were even killed. Why should the reality of our history be kept a secret form us? Yes it might be shocking and horrible but we can learn to accept it. Learning about mass genocide teaches us students a lesson and how to stop it from happening again.

Scopes Trial.

The Scopes Trial was one of the most significant events during the roaring twenties. This trial began because of John Scopes. He was a highschool biology teacher who was caught violating the rules because he taught evolution. In my opinion, there is not a right or wrong belief. People have different views on everything especially when it comes to how the world began. I was always taught the religious side of everything because i went to a catholic school when i was young, but ever since i moved to florida i havent heard anything but evolution. I have heard and learned both sides and both are very interesting. Teaching evolution is the best way to avoid problems with opinionated parents and kids about God. So in conclution, i believe that evolution is the best thing to be taught in schools because it is the safest way to go.

Reflection.

From the group presentations, i learned that the 1920's gangsters were all masterminds. All presentations presented by my classmates were unique and informative, and i found the process of finding information for this project very fun. My gangster was Kate Ma Barker and she was unlike any regular gangster. She was sort of undercover or in other words hiding from punishment because of her four sons. Her four sons were well known for the crimes and some of them even spent time in jail for it, but there is no record of Kate being part of these crimes. They were the perfect criminals, they tricked everyone into thinking they were innocent because it was a mother with her kids, the perfect disguise. From what i heard from my classmates, most of the gangsters actually knew eachother and even worked together in some crimes. All these criminals were not stupid, they thought beyond what regular people thought and succeeded at what they did. Not all were evil, some actually became friends with the people they assaulted. These group presentations were very helpful. I learned a lot more from working together and listening to others opinions and research than to find information by myself.

THE SCOPES TRIAL:
John Scopes, a Biology teacher who was put on trial for teaching evolution.

PROHIBITION:
This was to stop alcohol in the United States because husbands would abuse their families when drunk. The 18th amendment was the prohibition amendment, it banned manufacture, consumption, and sale of liquor which the IRS enforced.

FLAPPERS:
The new breed of women with short hair who smoked and drank in public. They wore sleeveless, short dresses and showed cleavage and legs.

ECONOMIC ISSUES:
-Economics suffered with income taxes being low for the wealthy.
-Worker’s salaries increased but did not match the rate of the price increases and farmers went further into debt.
-Immigration also became limited.
-Low interest rates.

DUST BOWL:
Dust, which was picked up from the ground created big clouds, making storms that traveled far to burying everything.
-Caused by severe drought, over farming, and mechanization.

AGRICULTURE ISSUES:
- Dust storms.
- No crop rotation.
- The farmers were overproducing.

IMMIGRATION POLICIES:
limited immigration from all the countries except Northern Europe.
- Emergency Quota Act.

NATIVISM:
Americans: they had rights to almost everything.
- Workers were under the law safe and protected.
Immigrants: had many restrictions.
- While working they were not safe and had no protection.

SIGNIFICANT LITERARY WORKS:

THE GREAT MIGRATION:
African americans migrated to escape racism and to seek jobs from the South to the North together.

HARLEM RENAISSANCE:
African Americans came together and shared their culture, literature, art, music.

SACCO & VANZETTI:
Italian Anarchists, who were involved in the Sacco and Vanzetti trial because they were accused of being in many of the murders and violent acts that occurred.

LABOR ISSUES:
The Great Depression had begun and this was when the soldiers would come back home, and there were no jobs available. Also, because so many of them were back home, factories were getting to full so they had to fire most of the women and immigrant workers.

THE RED SCARE: was a fear of communism. Bolshevik revolution cleaning up all of the corruption. People were afraid of people are un-American behaviors.

-Russia went away and the USSR was formed.

SCHNECK V. THE US: Espionage & Sedition Acts were declared constitutional by the Supreme Court.

Call of Duty.

Call of Duty is a first person and third person shooter video game. The majority of the games in the series are based on the World War II and the Cold War era. I know a lot of people who play Call of Duty. This game is played not only played by age appropriate people, this game is played mostly played by teens. Video games involving so much violence should not be allowed to be played by any one. These games cause such a transformation in a person it is scary. I have never played Call of Duty, but i have most certainly watched many people play it. After fully concentraiting on the game, emotions fly high. People begin to scream at the tv saying things like "@#$%^&*". Although i have never played Call of Duty i have played other violent games involving killing. At the begining you are at a lost of what to do but then you just start shooting and killing and after you know it you are completely into the game. I realized how my view point on it changed after playing the game. The excitement and rush of it all makes you not care so much about what it is actually teaching you. Violent games can only teach you one thing, and that is how to be violent. We as teens believe that it is stupid when people say that it is affecting us even if we do not realize it, and it is true. It might sound insane but games like this have actually given people the knoledge on how to kill in the REAL life. We do not need more death in this world and i truly believe that games like this can cause people to be violent and even kill in the real world. The sad part of it all is that small kids are being brought up with games like this. It is adverticed enough to catch anyones attention and if not seen on tv, then small kids can watch older siblings play this game and learn things that a child should not even know. In the game you have a fresh start after dying, but in reality you die you simply die, there is no new start. Once again, games like Call of Duty should not be allowed to be sold, because no body should be given the knoledge on how to kill.

When is the next one coming?

The soldiers in World War I had it pretty hard. I know this may sound stupid and sad, but i couldnt go a whole day without needing to use the computer or the internet. I would go insane if my only way to comunicate with my family and friends was by writing a letter. First of all it takes time to write a letter but it specially takes a while for the letter to get to that loved one. As i looked through the pictures of soldiers letters, i realized that all they could say is that they were "alright" or ask "how are things back home?" They must have not want to worry their loved ones on the reality of the war. And for those loved ones it must have been SO frustrating to have thoughts going through their mind of if that certain one was alive or not. These soldiers must have missed their kids and wives or girlfriends. All both of them could really do was to WAIT! Waiting and hope is all they had.

Dogfight.

From playing the game Dogfight on that link, i got an idea of the requirements and the great courage those pilots at war had to have. The first thing on my mind when just playing a simple game online was "How the heck am i supposed to kill and fly at the same time?" I did not even win once and my emotions where all over the place! All that kept running through my mind was that i wanted to win, which made me imagine what the people who actually fought in air must have been thinking about. These men put their life in the hands of change and skill. These men had to have gone through major training, not only physically but mentally. The second these men freaked out in air was probably when their lives were over. It is a hard job to succeed at, so the men who were chosen must have been ideal.

Transformers :{D

Transformers is a movie about a war that was between the noble Autobots and the devious Decepticons for control over the Allspark, a mystical piece that would grant unlimited power to whoever possessed it. The Autobots managed to smuggle the Allspark off the planet, but Megatron went off in search of it. He eventually tracked it in Earth but his hasty desire for power sent him right into the Ocean, and he got paralized. His body was later found. Megatron engraved a map, showing the location of the Allspark, into the Captain's glasses, and send a signal to Cybertron. A century later, Sam Witwickyby buys his first car. He discovers it to be Bumblebee, an Autobot in disguise who is to protect Sam, as he has the Captain's glasses and the map carved on them. But Bumblebee is not the only Transformer to have arrived on Earth. The Decepticons attack a U.S. military base, causing the Pentagon to send to capture all alien race. and Sam and his girlfriend find themselves in the middle of a grand battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons.

The movie Transformers relates to the ideas of imperialism because one stronger nation is opressing a weaker one. The stronger nation in the movie would have to be the Autobots and Decepticons, leaving the human race as the weak ones. The Decepticons are threatened by the earth, since that is where their most prized possession is at. They completely attack the earth in search of the Allspark. The Autobots feel that hurting innocent people is not necessary, so they defend humanity and fight to keep the Allstar safe. In the end the Decepticons are defeated and the Allstar is kept in good hands. Althought imperialism is not obvious, it is used in Transformers.

The Panama Canal.

Building The Panama Canal has been harder than expected. I go every single day to work very tired and weak. All i seem to see lately are very sick workers who suddenly die from diseases. I even think i am coming down with something because my energy level has extremely gone down. Another thing that does not help us workers out is the horrid climate. We work as hard as we can for many long hours under the hot and humid weather. I try to avoid thinking about death, although it is a possibility for all of us really, because our lives are put in danger every day. The main reason all of us do this hard labor is for the money. It is not much, but it sustains. I wake up and work, eat very little and in addition only get a few hours of sleep. It is not the life i want and i dread thinking that i might not survive this.

"Swine Flu Pandemic Global Nightmare"
"Swine Flu Pandemic Spreads"

The Swine Flu, also known as H1N1, was one of the most popular breakin news in 2009. This virus rapidly spread and became a concern for everyone. As you can see, the news headlines i used as examples are an exaggeration of what actually occured. Yes, many people did die from getting this virus, but it was NOT a pandemic! Yellow journalism is described as an eye-catching exaggeration. It is used nowadays as often as it was used during The Spanish American War, because the one and only purpose of it is to make people interested.

Week Nine Article.

Discuss why you agree or disagree with the blogging assessment system used in this course.
The blogging assessment system used in this course is original and thrilling. I, as a first time blogger this year have rapidly learned how to express opinions in a correct manner. Being part of the increasing users of technology, i believe blogging is the best way to attract the new generation into actually attempting to work in school. Nothing can be taken out of sitting around and writing down information to turn in. Teenagers use the internet for the majority of things now a days, so why not include school work into i?
Not only are we learning about the history of the United States, but we are expressing our point of views on each individual matter. Blogging or writing will help us all through out life. If written properly and in an interesting way, our articles or daily blogs can be a presentation for colleges to see our writing abilities.
Blogging can be a great way to practice how to back up a statement with believable facts and opinions. The future is ahead of us and we are only going to keep on making greater advances in technology, so the only way to help students succeed is by preparing them for it. 
In conclusion, i completely  agree with the blogging assessment system because it is effective. I would really like to utilize it more often.
