Topic. 07

THE SCOPES TRIAL:
John Scopes, a Biology teacher who was put on trial for teaching evolution.

PROHIBITION:
This was to stop alcohol in the United States because husbands would abuse their families when drunk. The 18th amendment was the prohibition amendment, it banned manufacture, consumption, and sale of liquor which the IRS enforced.

FLAPPERS:
The new breed of women with short hair who smoked and drank in public. They wore sleeveless, short dresses and showed cleavage and legs.

ECONOMIC ISSUES:
-Economics suffered with income taxes being low for the wealthy.
-Worker’s salaries increased but did not match the rate of the price increases and farmers went further into debt.
-Immigration also became limited.
-Low interest rates.


DUST BOWL:
Dust, which was picked up from the ground created big clouds, making storms that traveled far to burying everything.
-Caused by severe drought, over farming, and mechanization.

AGRICULTURE ISSUES:
- Dust storms.
- No crop rotation.
- The farmers were overproducing.

IMMIGRATION POLICIES:
limited immigration from all the countries except Northern Europe.
- Emergency Quota Act.


NATIVISM:
Americans: they had rights to almost everything.
- Workers were under the law safe and protected.
Immigrants: had many restrictions.
- While working they were not safe and had no protection.

SIGNIFICANT LITERARY WORKS:

- Sinclair, the Jungle, truth about mat process
-Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, life during the 20's
- Riis, How the Other Half Lives
- Hughes, The Ways of the White Folks
-Nader, Unsafe Atany Speed, about the safety of cars

THE GREAT MIGRATION:
African americans migrated to escape racism and to seek jobs from the South to the North together.

HARLEM RENAISSANCE:
African Americans came together and shared their culture, literature, art, music.

SACCO & VANZETTI:
Italian Anarchists, who were involved in the Sacco and Vanzetti trial because they were accused of being in many of the murders and violent acts that occurred.

LABOR ISSUES:
The Great Depression had begun and this was when the soldiers would come back home, and there were no jobs available. Also, because so many of them were back home, factories were getting to full so they had to fire most of the women and immigrant workers.

THE RED SCARE: was a fear of communism. Bolshevik revolution cleaning up all of the corruption. People were afraid of people are un-American behaviors.
- Bolshevik Revolution- Lenin takes over power in Russia
-Russia went away and the USSR was formed.

SCHNECK V. THE US: Espionage & Sedition Acts were declared constitutional by the Supreme Court.
